Hi Harry - I never trust Google when it comes to telling me what my bids should be. Bid what makes sense for the keyword. If you are getting good CPAs and can afford to test a higher bid to see if you get more clicks and conversions, run and experiment and see what happens.

That being said, I'm sure Google isn't playing games and trying to get us to inch our bids up. What I imagine is happening is that there are so many factors that are taken into consideration every time the auction is run (every time a search is done) that they haven't perfected recommendations for bids.

Best of luck!

Excellent post. Something I encounter often that makes me kind of crazy...wondering if you have an opinion on this...

Particularly when a campaign is new, after a day or so, it is common for Google to show you a bunch of "bid is not high enough for first page" messages."

Google will show you an estimated bid for first page.

When you increase the bid to match, or be slightly bigger than, the first page bid, the message will come right back, only now it's even higher!

It always bugs me. It's like Google saying, "This guy is willing to increase his bids by this much, bet he'll increase it even more!"

Any ideas on this?

Thanks for all the great material - I'm new to your site and I'm enjoying it...

Yep - I'm on the "focus" kool-aid this year. I'm one of those (recovering) marketing agencies that does EVERYthing.

I swear, if I spend one more minute on a design client I am going to SCREAM! Not that there's anything wrong with design, mind you, but because since I'm not a designer, I end up project managing design projects. This year....focus, focus, focus.

ONe of the ways I am doing this is to try and provide training - or at least pointers - for those people who come to me wanting something I don't want to do. Where I used to begrudgingly take the business, now I'll refer them to my informational site and also to a trusted provider who does want to do the work.

Nice post - thanks.

Pausing keywords/ad groups/campaigns has been a topic of discussion for sometime between some friends and I.

Thanks for clearing up the affect pausing has on QS, because I hated the idea of losing all of my historical data just to test a QS-improving tactic.

I. LOVE. THIS. POST!

I left "Corporate America" on Nov. 1, 2010 for GOOD! I do a lot of stuff - SEO, SMO, ORM, building wordpress sites, etc.

You gave excellent info about FOCUS! Now is the time for me to decide which of the things I do I do best and then be the best at that. I have plenty of connections all over the gamut of online marketing that I can partner with.

Thanks for this great feedback and advice.

Very good...and timely tips Pam. One of the biggest hurdles I have faced since being "downsized" is feeling like I need to be a jack of all Internet marketing trades as I go it on my own (and I know how the rest of that saying goes (: ). So your post really made sense and reminds me to keep it simple, focus on the aspects I'm "awesome" at and build a network to help out with the rest... thanks again!

It is always good to specialize in something that you are good at, that way it becomes easy to keep yourself updated on your specific field. I got no idea about PPC, i stick to SEO consulting and have never looked beyond that.

ultimately, a happy client is all we want.

Dead on with all the points here. I've been there and referrals are how I kept my consulting business going. Don't go for the "big names" - just make real friends. You get the best referrals from the most unlikely places.
